1).  Assistant Grower

This employee will be a grower for Monterey Bay Nursery, Inc. After training and when qualified this employee will most likely have substantial responsibility for production in specific areas or for specific crops as well as planning and propagation coordination for those crops or areas. 

Duties will involve all aspects of container production and production management, from moving, planting, pruning, staking, spraying or otherwise physically lifting and handling plants to computer data input, record keeping, and direction of employees. This employee may be in charge of supervising anywhere from 3 to probably no more than 10 workers at times when needed. 

This position would be filled by an employee with a four year degree in horticulture, agriculture, floriculture, or biology.

Job duties include:

-growing a wide variety of plants, both in cool greenhouses and outdoor environments
-overseeing production crews in planting and maintenance of plants
-employee management, including hiring, firing, and performance reviews
-facilitating propagation needs at the direction of the Propagator and Production Manager
-special projects
-supervision of greenhouse controls and environment
-occasional participation in periodic production meetings
-customer service
-sales support
-data input
-misc. office duties as needed
-assisting other area growers and Production Manager as needed

Required:

-enthusiasm
-genuine love for plants and growing
-honesty
-previous trade growing experience or equivalent education
-good attendance and punctuality habits
-rudimentary conversational (i.e., high school level) or trade-oriented Spanish language skills
-willingness and ability to work with chemicals and pesticides and direct their use
-good record keeping skills
-ability to work unsupervised
-ability to work supervised
-polite, professional, business-like attitude
-good team member
-good basic math skills
-typing skills
-willingness to learn
-willingness to ask questions and improve abilities
-excellent references
-verifiable job and education history

Helpful but not required:

-10 key entry skills
-QAC for chemical applications.
-word processor or spreadsheet experience
